Text: 2Kings 23:1-5

At the age of eight, Josiah became king of Judah, and committed himself to repairing the temple of the Lord (2 Kings 22:1–6). During the process, Hilkiah, the high priest, found the Book of the Law, which was then read to the king (2 Kings 22:8–10).

When Josiah heard the words of the Law, he was deeply moved. As a result, he led the people of Judah and Jerusalem in turning away from their idols (2 Kings 23:4–5) and renewing their covenant with the Lord (2 Kings 23:1–3). This event demonstrates the transformative power of God’s written Word in reminding and guiding His people (Exodus 17:10–14). This truth is also exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ. After fasting for forty days and nights, when He was tempted by the devil, Jesus consistently responded by pointing to Scripture, declaring, “It is written.”

Furthermore, the apostle Paul expands this idea by teaching that believers themselves are like letters from Christ, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, read by everyone.

Although in our society laws, commandments, regulations, and decrees often carry a negative connotation, the psalmist highlights the beauty and value of the Lord’s law (Psalm 119:97–105). God’s Word is not a burden but a gift.

Therefore, we must give thanks to God for the privilege of having His written Word as our guide.
