Topic: The power of a praying church
Texts: Acts 12: 1-5, Acts 6:1-4, Ephesians 6:17-20, Luc 22:46
Preacher: Brother JEREMIE NDABO
What would it look like if churches relied less on strategies, programming, and careful planning? What if we shifted our trust from our own knowledge or science, which could limit our humility, and instead sought God's wisdom?
Many churches today operate like corporations, with budgets and meetings consuming energy, distracting from prayer. It's not that these things are bad, but they often overshadow a deeper reliance. Human understanding is finite; it won't bring the deep transformation or Kingdom impact we need. In Acts 6:1-4, the apostles faced a critical choice: delegate the important service to others so they could dedicate themselves to prayer and the ministry of the word. This wasn't about valuing service less but about prioritizing what was most vital for their spiritual leadership.
This passage calls us to a similar discipline: subtraction, not just addition. What must we set aside to truly prioritize prayer? A church that stops praying inevitably loses its vitality, energy, and strength. Keeping prayer at the center is essential for the life of the church.
Considering Peter's desperate situation in Acts 12:1-5, he faced the following things:
Tyrannic King Herod
Jewish people who were pleased with the violence against Christians
Not only was he imprisoned but he was guarded by four squads of soldiers, in total they were 16 men guarding Peter
That was not enough, he was also in chains and apart from the soldiers he was also guarded by sentries
Despite these seemingly insurmountable challenges, the early church earnestly prayed for Peter. This narrative powerfully underscores the imperative to persevere in prayer, to continually call upon the name of God, for prayer remains our most potent recourse.
The Benefits of a Praying Church
When a church commits to prayer:
The work of mission/evangelism needs prayer to move forward
Prayer is key for managing all the aspects of the church as an organization, discipline, conflict, decision making, etc.
Prayer is essential for the effectiveness of the ministry of the word
Prayers keep the church pure by helping us overcome temptations
Prayer is essential for healing and restoration within the church
God moves in a mighty way when the church prays together in unity
Brothers and sisters, prayer is our potent resource; we should never underuse it. Remember, it's only through Jesus that we gain direct access to God, enabling the kind of deep, intense, serious, heartfelt prayers that Jeremiah 29:12-13 speaks of. Our effectiveness isn't measured by the size of our faith, but by our obedience to God's command to pray. Even a little obedience, when offered in faith, is enough to move mountains.
