Topic:  The continuing work of Jesus Christ through the church

Preacher: Sis. Gemma Urbano

1 Peter 2:9

Welcome to this special Sunday that opens the international month which will be led by internationals from different parts of the world except the DRC.

Our sermon is centered around the responsibility of disciples in continuing the work of Jesus Christ through the church.

When we started to believe, we were called sons and daughters of God through faith as it said in Galatians 3:26.

As we are expected to grow physically from infant, toddler, preschooler, middle childhood, adolescence, and then adult. We are also called to grow spiritually, we should not stay babies, we need to grow.

1 Peter 2:2-3:  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As we mature, we can now be trusted to do God’s work as a church. (1 peter2:4-10)

For which purpose are we a chosen generation, a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a consecrated nation, his own special people, God’s very own possession? (1 Peter 2:5,9)

  • To proclaim his praises and to declare or advertise or to testify the incredible blessings we inherited in Christ.
  • By doing his works (John 14:12) as Jesus does.

What would Jesus do? (Isaiah 61:1-3)

  • Teach and preach
  • Perform miracles
  • Set the captives free
  • Healing the sick
  • Give hope to the hopeless
  • Comfort all who mourn

How do we continue doing his work?

By being full of his Spirit (Acts 7:55)

Example of Stephen’s martyrdom

Dear Congregation, every one of us as a child of God in Christ through faith has the responsibility of continuing the work of spreading the gospel. It is only by the power of the Holy Spirit that we can continue doing the excellent works of the Lord Jesus as a church, even greater works we can do (Zechariah 4:6b) Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. Amen
