Topic: Being Holy is to make a choice

Texts: 1 Peter 3:13-22, Jhon 10 :16, Proverbs 4 :23, Deuteronomy 30:19-20

As humans, we make several choices in our daily life and that in all aspects of it, God in his infinite wisdom has given us the freedom to choose. However, our choices are limited within our natural capacity and from each choice we make comes consequences which can either be positive or negative.

Adam and Eve had two important abilities, to sin, and  to not sin. The devil tempted them and they unfortunately fell in his trap by choosing to implement their capacity to sin, as a consequence they lost their ability to not sin and so did all of humanity. Still, God in his mercy chose to pursue us by sending his son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to free us from the yoke of sin and to reconcile us with him.

Due to our spiritual limitations and human nature, we often act according to both internal (desires; feelings; values; beliefs etc.) and external (environment; peer pressure; culture; etc.) factors, feeding our ego instead of glorifying our Maker by making choices according to his will.

Three ultimate things for us to keep from this message are as follows:

  1. Our Holiness comes from Jesus Christ’s Choice to obey to the will of the Father, just as Adam and Eve Christ was as well tempted by the devil multiple times when he was on earth, but he chose to be obedient to God’s will, which made the plan of salvation successful.
  2. We are made Holy by choosing to believe in the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ, which break us free from the power of sin and restores in us the ability to not sin.
  3. We are made continually Holy by choosing Jesus daily.

Beloved ones, we have to allow the word of God to influence our actions questioning ourselves whether our choices reflect the love we have for God and our neighbors. As Christ freed us from the penalty of sin, we must cooperate with him in order to overcome the power of sin, Christ gave us the ability to not sin, it’s our responsibility to make it effective.
